A day in the life ...

... of a Rotary Peace Fellow!

"A ROLLING STONE GATHERS NO MOSS." ~Publius Syrus.

Each day we learned and each day was different. Join me as I share some of the things we did:

Looking at some of the foods the locals prepared right on the sidewalk. Can you see the chili pepper? They put it in everything!!!

One of many group pictures

On my way to school with Manisha, Erinma and Ian

Chatting during our 10 o'clock tea break

Lunching in our cafeteria downstairs

Dropping off my laundry before class in the morning. It would be ready in less than two day and cost between $2. and $4. Everything was folded and ironed (if you provided the hangers).

Walking through the busy streets of Bangkok

MBK Center is a large mall with over 2,000 stores! Martin renamed it "The Temple of Desire." It was a five minute walk from the dorm and a place we would frequent daily!

Tops Market is where we would go food shopping! They had incredible whole wheat nut bread and delicious fruit - pomelo, papaya and mango were my personal favorites!

Drinking absolutely delicious fruit shakes for dinner!

Going to the posh gym to decompress - The Olympic at the Princess Hotel

Hanging out at the jacuzzi with Manisha

Having "girl talk" in Manisha's room with Aarti, Andrezza and Ben

Seeing each other in the hallways of our dorm - Viddhaya Nives. And no, they didn't all plan to wear red and pink. :o) Dorm living was great - running down one end of the hall for a cup of tea with Manisha and the other end for a chat about class with Aarti or Ian. Dorm living is so different when you're older! - better, actually!

Learning, learning, learning ...

Glancing over at my classmates

Skyping Ian in Indianapolis from my dorm room #408!

Align Center
Looking at my world map every day after class ... with different eyes!

Shopping at MBK!!!

Returning to my dorm with a neatly made up bed, fresh towels and a clean bathroom

Buying my cashews ... gosh, they're expensive!!

Waiting for someone to make my favorite salad in the mortar - PAPAYA SALAD (green papaya, cherry tomatoes, green beans, peanuts, chili peppers and fresh lime juice)!

Using "different" toilets - we encountered this one in transit on one of our field studies. Martin was not happy at all!! I thought it was funny and could recall telling my student that you must not judge something as "good" or "bad" - just different!

Eating dinner at one of our professor's (Jost Wagner) home

Eating street food

Shopping at my favorite store on the way to the sky train. All of the dresses and shirts here were less than $7.00!! Yes, I did a "little" shopping here! ;o)

Being inside of the air-conditioned sky train. Look how clean it is!

Enjoying the view from the Sky Train while getting to another part of the city. Even if my final destination wasn't far, I'd take the Sky Train because it was air-conditioned!!!

Going bargain shopping at J.J. Market (know as Chatuchak Weekend market). The heat on this particular day was intolerable!!!

Bargain shopping!! Ian initially showed Erinma the ropes. Let me tell you, she was a quick learner! It wasn't long that we referred to her as the "Queen of Shopping!"

Protecting ourselves from the sun ...

Shielding ourselves from the rain.

Eating fruit for dessert - again!

Going to a Rotary meeting with Manisha!

Getting up early in the morning for one of our early flights out of Bangkok
to our field studies

Attending countless hours of lectures

Getting comfortable in our "home"/classroom for almost 8 hours a day. Last time I recall sitting this long was in middle school. What an adjustment! :o)

Aarti, Ben and me on a field visit in Northern Thailand

Visting Gabfai Community Theatre where "a single flame can light a thousand candles"

Visting the refugee camps via Jeep

Every night there were vendors on the bridge, near MBK, selling anything you could imagine!
